THE WORLD'S GREATEST MURDER MYSTERY

WATCH OUR INTRODUCTION TO THE CASE

A GREAT WHODUNIT LONDON TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITY

Jack the Ripper. He outfoxed the combined talents of the Metropolitan Police of 1888. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the great Sherlock Holmes, tried to solve the mystery.... and failed. Johnny Depp had a bash at figuring it out in the film From Hell and even a dodgy cockney accent couldn't help him crack the case. Authors, academics and amateur sleuths have been on Jack the Ripper's bloodstained trail since 1888, and yet today, over 120 years later, he remains as elusive as ever. Can you solve the Jack the Ripper mystery?

THE JACK THE RIPPER TEAM BUILDING CSI CHALLENGE

So, to begin with, you will meet with your lead detective on the case for the Jack the Ripper Treasure hunt briefing.

You join the Jack the Ripper Mystery on 1st September 1888. There have already been several murders in the area, but on the previous evening, what is now widely acknowledged to have been the first murder by Jack the Ripper, that of Mary Nichols, has taken place and the hunt for the Whitechapel Murderer is underway.

YOU HAVE BEEN DRAFTED INTO THE AREA TO CATCH HIM

Aware that the local division of the Metropolitan Police, H Division, might not be able to solve the mystery and catch the killer, the top officers from other Metropolitan Police divisions have been drafted into the area and, in theory, your team is made up of officers of one of those divisions.

YOUR 1888 CSI KIT

But, of course, you can't be expected to hunt for the world's most infamous criminal without a CSI kit. So each team will be presented with a Casebook of documents and photographs that should, hopefully, bring you up to speed on the police's progress so far (which admittedly isn't a great deal!)

YOUR CSI KIT WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:-

  • A Victorian Map Showing the Streets that you will be investigating as they were in 1888.
  • A set of contemporary black and white photographs of the murder sites and other places associated with the crimes as they were in the late 19th century. These will enable your team to form mental image of the significant locations and to get to grips with the layout of the area.
  • Contemporary 1888 newspaper reports that show how the murders were reported in the days and weeks after they occurred.
  • Facsimiles of the letters that the police were receiving at the height of the Ripper scare, including the one that gave the Whitechapel Murderer the name by which he would become best known throughout the world - Jack the Ripper.
  • A crime report sheet of questions and items that your team of detectives must look out for as you make your way around the crime sites. This will consist of photo challenges and observations questions.

THE JACK THE RIPPER LONDON TEAM BUILDING CHALLENGES

Your quest will consist of you being taken around the murder sites by your lead detective. He will tell you the Jack the Ripper story and present you with an in depth analysis of the relevant details concerning the case. So, in addition to enjoying a great team building exercise, you will also learn a great deal about the world's greatest murder mystery.

YOU MUST IDENTIFY AND PHOTOGRAPH THE MURDER SITES

One of your major challenges will be to use your contemporary Victorian Photographs and map to indentify the exact site of each crime. Since the actual murder sites themselves have long since vanished this is something of a challenge and, having identified them, you will have to acquire photos of your team standing on what you think are the murder sites. Your lead detective will award points for each exact murder site correctly identified and photographed with your team member standing at it.

YOU MUST THEN FIND YOUR WAY TO THE NEXT MURDER SITE

However, identifying the murder sites themselves is only part of the challenge. Because, although your lead detective will be on hand to tell you the Jack the Ripper story, he will not lead you between the murder sites. What he will do is give you an introduction to the next murder site and it is then left to your team to work together and use your 1888 map to get to the next murder site by the quickest possible route. Once you get there your lead detective will be on hand to tell you the story of that particular murder.

IT'S ALSO A JACK THE RIPPER QUIZ

Each team of detectives will also be given a sheet of 20 questions that they must answer pertaining to things that they will hear at each murder site or that they will come across as they conduct their Jack the Ripper Crime Scene Investigations.

A SPECIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC CHALLENGE - CAN YOU SPOT IT?

In addition there will be two "what are they now?" photographs that show locations that are still standing as they were in 1888. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to snap a photograph of those two buildings as they are today and your team will be awarded points accordingly.

The grand finale for the Jack the Ripper Team Building Treasure Hunt will see each of the teams gathering in a restaurant or pub that is associated with the case. Here you can enjoy a meal or a drink, (or both!) whilst your lead detective asks fires 15 further questions at you pertaining to things you have heard or seen in the course of your investigation.
